Molecular Genetics

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Methods to characterize phenotypes and genotypes, and techniques to predict the results of conservation, breeding, and genetic manipulation are essential tools in genetics. Conceptual models ranging from the classical, molecular to the population level allow geneticists to design studies, interpret the results of experiments, and formulate actions that create benefits in agriculture, industry, and medicine. This course aims to discuss the principles and mechanisms of heredity at the molecular level based on studies of prokaryotic, eukaryotic and viral systems.

COURSE OUTCOMES:

1.       Describe and explain the key conceptual models on single and multiple gene inheritance, genetic linkage, gene mapping, and gene interactions.

2.       Describe and explain key concepts on DNA replication, regulation of gene expression, DNA mutation repair, and advances in genomics.

3.       Perform quantitative analysis of data generated in genetics experiments.
