Welcome to the Conversation! This course will engage with some of the most important ideas bequeathed to us by a number of illustrious thinkers in the Western intellectual tradition who grappled with are considered timeless questions concerning society, politics, and economics.
The course aims to equip you with the theories and concepts needed to examine the different issues of the day and, by doing so, help you hone your capacity for critical thinking. We will study these ideas through excerpts from the works of these thinkers, supplemented by other resources.
Social Science 2 is a General Education (GE) course. In contrast to your major courses, GE courses like Social Science 2 are not meant to teach you how to practice a profession and earn a living. Rather they are intended to provide knowledge and hone skills needed by all human beings to develop as persons and as members of the society to which they belong. In particular, as a GE course, Social Science 2 seeks to broaden students’ intellectual and cultural horizons, as well as cultivate a capacity for independent, critical, and creative thinking.
