The application of rhetorical theories and methods to the analyses and production of
Digital texts and performances. The course will survey the classical, modern, and contemporary foundations
of rhetoric as a discipline of study. It will explore the historical development of Western rhetoric, as well as
examine key concepts in rhetorical criticism and practice. In studying the art of persuasion, the texts and
contexts of rhetoric, and the structures and strategies of argumentation, the course ultimately intends
to develop interpretive and critical thinking about public culture and civic life on one hand, and to
encourage students to pursue independent research on rhetorical theory, criticism, and history on the other.
