Course Description

This is an in-depth discussion and extensive exploration of the different architectural passive design strategies addressing the factors that affect buildings in a tropical setting, without exerting unnecessary energy to achieve thermal comfort. These factors encompass heat-gain, excessive humidity and moisture related problems. The course concludes with the proper application of all these design strategies in a building case study.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students must be able to:

1.     Assess the impact of the site climatic factors to the design program and requirements

2.     Choose the appropriate architectural passive design strategy to address per climatic factor

3.     Design a tropical building using these strategies
