The United Nations General Assembly declared 2021 – 2030 the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, recognizing that restoration is fundamental to sustainable development, mitigating and adapting to climate change, enhancing food security, and preserving water and biodiversity. Consequently, this course is about the science and practice of restoration ecology. The field of restoration ecology (distinct as a science discipline but is complementary from the practice of restoration) deals with the fundamental principles of ecosystem dynamics, theories of biodiversity, and the concepts and methods of landscape/seascape ecology in the context of restoration. The course will discuss ecological theory and practice in the restoration of populations, communities, ecosystems, and landscapes, with an emphasis on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
