This course highlights how the structure and use of language is inextricably linked to the ways in which individuals relate to each other and understand their social worlds. As such, the class integrates discussions and exercises on theories on the structure of language, defining speech communities, the ethnography of communication, language ideologies and critical discourse analysis.
Students will conduct their own research where they are expected to apply key concepts, theories and methododologies in linguistic anthropology
