Popular music is the voice of the people. World music. Global pop. World beat. Music genres and cultures such as Afropop, the Caribbean reggae, the Latin American nuevo cancion, the Brazilian samba, the hiphop of Oceania, the Bollywood soundtracks from India, the East Asian Jpop and Kpop, the Indonesian dangdut, and the birit queens of OPM are all music expressions that have been widely credited as a particular society’s experience, culture, history and taste at a given point in time. Thus, international popular musics become an avenue in understanding nations and peoples, and as an opportunity to reconcile and celebrate cultural differences and similarities. Lived in the everyday, popular music is a crucial navigator of a people’s notions of 28 identity, belongingness, and memory.
This GE course combines both listening experiences and performance requirements in order to appreciate and 31 learn about the different popular music expressions across the globe.
