Archaeo 201 or Foundations of Archaeology is "an introductory survey to the theory and praxis of archaeology, its development and transformation, from a theoretical, methodological, and historical approach.
The course aims to provide students information and knowledge pertaining to the discipline’s foundations so that they are able to situate and engage fellow students and members of the archaeology community on the more profound issues and debates current to the study of the past.
This course was designed to introduce to graduate students, coming from a varied undergraduate disciplinal background, the philosophy of archaeology and its conventions. It also aims to enhance the formation of critical thinking among members of the class. It is also hoped that the students will be more discerning in assessing scholarly works, especially in the field of archaeology and heritage studies.
Upon completing the course, students must be able to:
CO 1. Evaluate the history and development of the discipline of archaeology
CO 2. Apply key philosophical and theoretical concepts used by archaeology;
CO 3. Apply disciplinal reasoning and conventions.
CO 4. Synthesise approaches to archaeological information and knowledge.
