ARTS I is a General Education (GE) course that will help familiarise you with the critical discussion, debates, methodologies and theories surrounding the interpretation and expressions of art. You will be introduced to key texts and learning materials that are pertinent tools to the analysis of visual and material culture and thus learn to navigate through the ecologies of discourse that are key to developing critical perspectives in the discipline.
The class is divided into 4 units:
- Unit 1: Approaches to the Study of Art
- Unit 2: The Language of Art
- Unit 3: The Production of Art
- Unit 4: Special topics: Art in Society
Overall, the course not only aims to enhance an appreciation for the production and reception of art in global and localised contexts, but, given our current socio-cultural circumstances, to also locate one's understanding and appreciation of its production and to be within a nexus of interdisciplinary fields.
