COURSE DESCRIPTION

Even though we do not think of what we are doing as such, we all do research all the time. This is simply because we have choices to make about matters such as what to wear, what to buy, how to spend time, and where we ought to spend it. And this process compels us to make observations of human behavior, interpret the observations according to some cognitive framework, and draw conclusions from them. This is typically, human inquiry.

This course introduces students to the basics of communication research particularly its nature, processes, and applications. It also prepares students to undertake their own research by providing a working knowledge of the principles, concepts, methods, and problems of communication research in the Philippines.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  1. Understand and explain the nature, scope, and relevance of communication research;
  2. Conceptualize and operationalize communication research;
  3. Analyze the nature and potential of the different communication research methods and tools;
  4. Exhibit initial skill in the design of a communication research; and
  5. Appreciate the roles and responsibilities of a communication researcher as well as the ethics involved in the conduct of communication research.
