COMM 100: Introduction to Communication and Media

Learning outcomes: By the end of the course, students should be able to explain, relate, and contextualize the conceptions, contributions, and functions of communication and media throughout history and in contemporary society. The course will be taught in five (5) modules, which are designed to help students:

  1. Characterize communication and media as a discipline and as practice;
  2. Illustrate the transformative roles of communication and media in the history of global and Philippine society;
  3. Analyze contemporary societal issues and phenomena from the perspective of communication and media; and
  4. Articulate the significance of communication and media scholarship and practice to an inclusive, equitable and progressive society.

The modules for the course are as follows:

  • Module 1: Communication and Media: Definitions, Models, Traditions
  • Module 2: Development of Communication Science and Media Technologies
  • Module 3: History of Communication and Media in the Philippines
  • Module 4: Contemporary Issues I: Media in Philippine Society
  • Module 5: Contemporary Issues II: New Media and the Digital Age
